Ultra Mega’s latest EP, ‘Panis Angelicus’ is a “west-end western” that tells of a man’s fleeting connection to his indifferent surroundings. Inspired by an aimless meander through a deserted neighbourhood, the album combines western psychedelic soundscapes over Lee Hazlewood-style narration, swirling and rustling like a plastic bag caught in the bushes.
The album tells a story about the physical and metaphysical relationship between a man in his neighbourhood, as he wrestles to glean meaning from it. Frontman JD Ormond’s dry delivery carries the listener along at a slow lope from song to song, like a stoned tour guide through an old museum.
Since their first release (2008’s Black Wu Jackets, a seven song EP of rearranged Wu Tang songs), Ultra Mega have assumed various forms (Neil Young on morphine, instrumental 80’s police movie music), but never long enough to stiffen at the joints. Shape shifting through western twang, delicate psychedelia and sardonic lyricism in 3 part harmonies to surreal and ethereal effect.
Panis Angelicus marks the first album since their self titled full length in 2016. It is due out in January, 2022 on Eat Em Up Records.
